A New Faith-Inspired Video Game Lets You Play as a Sword-Wielding, Giant-Fighting Leper

Indie developer CALYXIR has announced The Abased, a Bible-inspired fantasy action RPG set in an pre-Flood world where giants are back, civilization is fraying and the main character is dealing with leprosy on top of everything else.

Players will step into the role of Elyhias, described as a fallen “faith enforcer” cast out under the “Holy Law” and marked by afflictions that erode “both body and spirit.” CALYXIR’s premise is not subtle: Elyhias is unclean, unwelcome and running out of time. A ruler promises atonement and cleansing if Elyhias takes up a mostly-forgotten duty at the edge of society, confronting resurgent giants before they reach settlements and trade routes.

The developers have shared gameplay will emphasize deliberate, grounded combat where timing and positioning matter more than reckless aggression. Players will rely heavily on a sling to disrupt and stagger giants at range, create openings and control distance before closing in with blades. The studio frames giant encounters as tracked hunts tied to real threats, not random boss fights that conveniently wait near a glowing arena.

Outside combat, the game leans into management systems linked to Elyhias’ condition. Wounds left untreated worsen over time, pushing players to cleanse and recover rather than brute-force the next objective. A “spiritual balance” mechanic will also shape play: devotion is pitched as discipline and clarity while surrendering to feral instinct offers temporary aggression and resistance, with longer-term consequences if it becomes a habit.

The game is in development for Windows PC and is listed on Steam, though a release date has not been announced.
