Hannah Harper brought “Ain’t No Grave” to the American Idol stage Monday night, earning strong praise from the judges during the show’s Top 20 performances. After she finished, all three judges praised her performance. Lionel Richie told her she “went from singing to preachin’,” while Luke Bryan joked that she may have started a new genre: “resurrection rock.” Carrie Underwood called it a “great song choice” and said Harper’s voice gave her chills. Harper, 25, is from Missouri and comes from a bluegrass Gospel background. According to her official bio, she started performing as a child in a family rooted in bluegrass Gospel music, a background that still shapes her sound. TV Insider also reported that she spent years singing in church and performing with her family. In an Instagram post after Monday’s episode, Harper wrote, “More than anything, I’m just incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have this platform to bring glory to God and for the freedom to openly sing and speak about my Lord without hesitation.” Monday night’s rendition was the second Christian song Harper’s performed during Season 24’s competition. Last week, she sang Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” which solidified her spot in the Top 20.
