Lent prep: What’s your plan this year?

As the Lenten season approaches, Christians around the world prepare for forty days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. But how do you make the most of this sacred time? Having a concrete plan can transform Lent from a vague spiritual exercise into a profound journey of faith.

Why Planning Matters

Scripture tells us in Proverbs 21:5, "The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance." The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. Without intentionality, Lent can slip by without genuine transformation. A well-thought-out plan gives structure to your devotion and helps you stay accountable.

Three Pillars of a Lenten Plan

Prayer: Consider adding a daily devotional time, attending weekday services, or praying the Stations of the Cross. Even fifteen minutes of silent meditation each morning can deepen your relationship with God. As Jesus taught in Matthew 6:6, "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."

Fasting: Beyond the traditional abstinence from meat on Fridays, think about what truly holds your attention captive. Social media, streaming services, or excessive snacking — fasting from these can create space for God's voice. Remember Isaiah 58:6: "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice?"

Almsgiving: Generosity is the fruit of a heart transformed by prayer and fasting. Volunteer at a local shelter, donate to a charitable cause, or simply practice random acts of kindness. As Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

Making It Personal

Write your Lenten commitments down. Share them with a friend or family member who can encourage you along the way. Remember that perfection is not the goal — growth is. If you stumble, get back up and keep walking toward Easter with renewed determination.

This Lent, don't just give something up. Take something on. Embrace the journey, trust the process, and let God surprise you with His grace along the way.
