About San Fernando Cathedral

📜 History

San Fernando Cathedral traces its origins to the dawn of San Antonio, when in 1731 the Spanish Crown sent 55 settlers from the Canary Islands to establish themselves in the presidio. Juan Antonio Pérez de Almazán, the military commander, was directed to find a site for building a church for them. The cornerstone for San Fernando Church was laid on May 11, 1738, named after Ferdinand III of Castile, who ruled parts of present-day Spain in the 13th century. For nearly 95 years, it served as the church for all religious denominations of San Antonio, making it a unique ecumenical center during the early development of this historic Texas city, witnessing its transformation from Spanish colonial outpost to American metropolis.

🏛️ Architecture

The cathedral presents a fascinating architectural evolution that reflects the multiple cultural influences of San Antonio throughout its history. Its structure combines elements of Spanish Colonial style with later Gothic Revival additions, creating a unique synthesis in the American religious landscape. The original 18th-century building was significantly expanded and rebuilt in the 19th century, with participation from architects including Francois P. Giraud and Dielman Leo. The cathedral was completed in its current form around 1868, incorporating neo-Gothic elements that complement the Spanish Colonial foundation. Its distinctive dome has become San Antonio cultural and geographical center, visible from multiple points throughout the city and serving as a landmark for generations.
