About Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba
📜 History
The construction of Córdoba's Mosque began in 785 AD under the emirate of Abd al-Rahman I, first Umayyad emir of al-Andalus. During three centuries, successive expansions under Abd al-Rahman II, al-Hakam II, and Almanzor transformed it into one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. After the Christian conquest of Córdoba in 1236, it functioned as a Catholic cathedral while maintaining its Islamic structure. In 1523, Bishop Alonso Manrique ordered the construction of a Gothic-Renaissance cathedral within its interior, creating a unique synthesis between Islamic and Christian architecture that symbolizes eight centuries of cultural coexistence in al-Andalus.
🏛️ Architecture
The Mosque-Cathedral presents a unique structure worldwide with 856 columns of marble, jasper, and granite supporting the innovative double-arch system: horseshoe arches at the base and semicircular arches above, alternating red and white voussoirs. The mihrab, oriented toward Mecca, stands out for its decoration of Byzantine mosaics and polychrome marble. The Renaissance cathedral, inserted in the center, harmoniously contrasts with the Islamic forest of columns. The Patio of Orange Trees, with its fountains and vegetation, completes the ensemble. The Christian bell tower rises above the ancient Almohad minaret, creating an extraordinary architectural symbiosis between East and West.
