About Catedral de Lima

📜 History

Lima Cathedral was founded alongside the city in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, marking the beginning of Christian evangelization in Peru. Its current construction began in 1602 after earthquakes destroyed previous structures, becoming a symbol of Catholic faith in South America. For nearly two centuries of construction until 1797, the cathedral witnessed crucial historical moments of the Peruvian viceroyalty. Its vaults have echoed with prayers from conquistadors, viceroys and citizens for more than five centuries of Peruvian history.

🏛️ Architecture

This majestic basilica combines Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles in a unique architectural synthesis in South America. Its main facade presents three stone portals carved with exceptional artistic precision, while its twin towers rise majestically over the Main Square. The interior houses Gothic ribbed vaults covering its three naves, creating a sacred space of monumental proportions. Golden altarpieces, carved cedar choir stalls and Baroque confessionals complete this masterpiece of Peruvian viceregal architecture.
