About Basilique-cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Québec

📜 History

The Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Québec holds the unique distinction of being Canada's oldest church, with origins tracing back to the small chapel built by Samuel de Champlain in 1633. After the first construction was burned down, the Jesuits erected a new stone church in 1647. The current structure was reconstructed between 1766 and 1771, following Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry's 1743 plans, after being destroyed during the Siege of Québec in 1759. The bell tower was designed by Jean Baillairgé, who also supervised the works. In 1874, Pope Pius IX elevated the cathedral to minor basilica status to mark the bicentennial of the Diocese of Québec, making it the first official Catholic pilgrimage site in North America. The current neoclassical façade was redesigned in 1843 by Thomas Baillairgé, inspired by the Church of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, resulting in Québec's finest neoclassical façade. This cathedral witnessed the birth and development of Catholic Canada through four centuries of continuous worship.

🏛️ Architecture

The Cathedral-Basilica's architecture represents a fascinating evolution of styles over the centuries, combining French colonial elements with later neoclassical influences. The main structure, reconstructed in the 18th century, maintains the proportions and layout typical of New France religious architecture, with a Latin cross plan and elevated central nave. Thomas Baillairgé's neoclassical façade, inspired by Parisian architecture, presents an elegant frontispiece with Corinthian columns and harmonious proportions that stand out in Québec's urban landscape. The interior was richly decorated with impressive works of art, including baldachin, canopy, and episcopal throne dais, all executed by Canadian master craftsmen. The side altars and main altar display gilded woodwork of exceptional quality, while stained glass windows narrate episodes from Canada's religious history. The crypt houses the tombs of four governors of New France and the bishops of Québec, including the first, François de Laval. The architectural ensemble demonstrates the successful adaptation of European ecclesiastical traditions to North American conditions.
