About St. Louis Cathedral
📜 History
The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, stands as a living witness to the rich multicultural history of New Orleans. The first church on this site was built in 1718, but the current structure traces its roots to 1789 when the cornerstone of a new church was laid during the Spanish Louisiana period. Completed in 1794, it was elevated to cathedral rank in 1793, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in continuous use in the United States alongside the Royal Presidio Chapel in Monterey, California. The building suffered damage during the great fire of 1788, but was rebuilt and significantly expanded in the 1840s and 1850s, with little of the original 1789 structure remaining today.
🏛️ Architecture
The cathedral presents a fascinating blend of architectural styles that reflect the diverse cultural influences of New Orleans throughout its history. Its contemporary design, completed in the 1850s, combines Greek Revival, Gothic, and Renaissance motifs that stunned New Orleans society of the time. The facade features three distinctive spires, with the central one reaching 130 feet in height, dominating Jackson Square and creating an iconic silhouette against the Louisiana sky. The interior preserves elements of the original Spanish Colonial style mixed with French Neo-Gothic additions, creating a unique atmosphere that evokes both European grandeur and distinctive American Southern character. The cathedral is strategically positioned between the historic buildings of the Cabildo and the Presbytère.
