About Iglesia Santa Catalina de Alejandria
📜 History
The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena was founded on September 10, 1579, barely forty years after Arequipa foundation, becoming one of the oldest and most emblematic religious complexes of the Peruvian viceroyalty. Established by the Dominican order as a female cloistered convent, this sanctuary welcomed for centuries daughters of Arequipa aristocracy who sought a life of contemplation and service to God. Throughout almost five centuries of existence, Santa Catalina has witnessed Peru social, political and religious evolution, uninterruptedly maintaining its spiritual function while preserving invaluable testimonies of colonial convent life.
🏛️ Architecture
This religious citadel constitutes an extraordinary example of Arequipa colonial architecture, built entirely with white sillar from Chachani volcano and pink sillar from Misti, giving it unique luminosity and warmth. The complex spans over 20,000 square meters of cobblestone streets, squares, cloisters, cells and chapels recreating a small colonial city in perfect conservation. Its thick sillar walls, semicircular arches, courtyards with central fountains and Catalan vault ceilings show three centuries evolution of viceregal architecture. Original murals, colonial furniture and decorative elements make Santa Catalina a living museum of Andean convent life.
