About Iglesia de San Ignacio

📜 History

In the heart of La Candelaria, between 10th and 11th streets with 6th and 7th avenues, rises the majestic Church of San Ignacio, one of the most beautiful testimonies of Jesuit colonial architecture in America. Its construction began in 1610 when Father Juan Bautista Coluccini, Italian architect of the Society of Jesus, laid the first stone of what would be his masterpiece. For more than 80 years, between 1610 and 1691, generations of artisans and devotees worked on building this temple that honors Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The architectural project was inspired by the church of Gesù in Rome, mother house of the Jesuits, adapting the style to the materials and construction techniques of New Granada. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the temple went through various uses until it was reconsecrated in 1904.

🏛️ Architecture

The architecture of the Church of San Ignacio represents a masterful synthesis between European Baroque and American construction traditions, creating the style we know as Andean Baroque. The temple, with a single nave and lateral chapels, exhibits a carved stone facade that combines classical elements with decorative motifs typical of the New World. Its interior surprises with the richness of its golden altarpieces, especially the main altarpiece, a masterpiece of Bogotá colonial art that frames a series of canvases of great artistic value. The lateral chapels, dedicated to different devotions, house sculptures and paintings that constitute a true museum of sacred art. The Mudéjar coffered ceiling, Solomonic columns, and carved pulpits turn every corner into a lesson in colonial art history.
