About Duomo di Milano
📜 History
Construction of Milan Cathedral began in 1386 under the patronage of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan, who dreamed of creating Italy's most magnificent Gothic cathedral. For over five centuries, master stonemasons, architects, and artists from across Europe contributed to its construction. The cathedral has witnessed crucial historical moments: here Napoleon was crowned King of Italy in 1805, and from its terraces the Cisalpine Republic was proclaimed. Generations of Milanese participated in its construction through donations and voluntary work, making the project an authentic community endeavor. Its construction extended into the 20th century, being officially completed in 1965 with the installation of the final stained glass windows.
🏛️ Architecture
The Duomo represents the pinnacle of Flamboyant Gothic expression in Italy, with unique innovations that distinguish it from northern European cathedrals. Its 135 spires reach skyward like a symphony of carved stone, crowned by sculptures that narrate sacred history. The Neo-Gothic façade, completed during the Napoleonic era, presents an intricate tapestry of reliefs, statues, and pinnacles. Inside, the five naves extend majestically under vaults reaching 45 meters in height. The 55 columns, each unique, support this immensity with sculptural elegance. The stained glass windows, some from the 15th century, filter light creating mystical atmospheres that change throughout the day.
⭐ Key Facts
As Italy's largest cathedral and the world's sixth largest by area, Milan's Duomo transcends its religious function to become a universal symbol of the city. Its highest spire, the golden Madonnina, has protected Milan since 1774 and is visible throughout Lombardy. Seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Milan, it houses treasures like the Holy Nail from the Cross, ceremonially displayed each September. During the 2020 pandemic, it became a symbol of hope when the archbishop celebrated a solitary mass for all Italy. It attracts over 6 million visitors annually, being Milan's most visited monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
An eternal cathedral where every stone tells five centuries of faith, art, and Milanese glory under the Madonnina's protection.
