About Basilique du Sacré-Cœur
📜 History
This emblematic basilica was constructed between 1875 and 1914 atop Montmartre hill as an act of national expiation following the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and tragic events of the Paris Commune. The initiative emerged from Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury, who envisioned this project as means to moralize and unify France after these tragedies. The cornerstone was laid in 1875, marking the beginning of construction lasting nearly four decades. The project symbolized French spiritual renewal and return to traditional Catholic values, becoming a symbol of resistance and unwavering faith throughout turbulent times.
🏛️ Architecture
Paul Abadie designed this masterpiece in Romano-Byzantine style, a bold choice contrasting with predominant Gothic architecture. The basilica features an impressive 83-meter-high dome visible throughout Paris, built in white Château-Landon stone maintaining eternal luminosity. Its structure combines multiple smaller domes, an 84-meter bell tower housing the famous 19-ton Savoyarde bell, and an ornate façade with Sacred Heart sculptures. The interior displays dazzling golden mosaics, especially the great choir mosaic depicting the Sacred Heart adored by France. Architectural elements create mystical atmosphere through light interplay and spiritual symbolism.
