About Monasterio de Santa Catalina
📜 History
The Monastery of Santa Catalina in Arequipa was founded on September 10, 1579, by the widow Doña María de Guzmán, who donated all her wealth to establish this Dominican cloistered monastery. After devastating earthquakes in 1600 and 1604 destroyed the original buildings, the monastery experienced a definitive rebirth in the 17th century. Wealthy criolla and mestiza families from Arequipa sent their daughters here, growing the community to over 300 women including nuns and servant maids. This city within a city remained isolated from the outside world for centuries, surrounded by 4-meter high walls that protected the contemplative life of the nuns and kept Dominican spiritual traditions alive in Peru's White City.
🏛️ Architecture
This extraordinary monastic complex spans 20,000 square meters like a small city within Arequipa, built with the region's characteristic sillar stone - the porous, pinkish-white volcanic rock from Chachani volcano (white) and Misti volcano (pink) that gives Arequipa its 'White City' nickname. The architecture represents a unique fusion of colonial mudéjar (Moorish-Christian) and indigenous styles, known as 'mestizo' architecture. Massive flying buttresses, strong arches supported by robust pillars, domes and vaulted ceilings create an imposing yet harmonious ensemble. Winding alleys, picturesque courtyards including the famous Silence Courtyard and Orange Cloister, private cells, kitchens with blackened domed ceilings, and chapels form a fascinating labyrinth that preserves colonial architecture in its purest state.
⭐ Key Facts
The Monastery of Santa Catalina represents one of the most significant jewels of Arequipa's religious and architectural World Heritage. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa' and a living testimony of colonial contemplative life, this monastic complex has preserved Dominican spiritual traditions for centuries. After nearly 400 years of seclusion, part of the monastery opened to the public in 1970, becoming a living museum of Arequipan faith and culture. Today, nuns still reside in the northern section continuing contemplative traditions, while visitors can wander through historic chambers, admire Cusco School paintings, baroque altars of carved and gilt wood, and witness approximately 400 colonial art pieces in this authentic window into Peru's religious past.
Enter this cloistered world where time stood still within walls of white sillar stone and history comes alive.
