About Basílica de San Pedro
📜 History
The Basilica of San Pedro was born in 1568 with the arrival of the first Jesuits to Peru, establishing itself as the first church of the Society of Jesus in Hispanic America. Initially called San Pablo after the college of the same name, it became the nerve center of Jesuit evangelization in the Peruvian viceroyalty. Its definitive construction was completed in 1638, becoming a testament to Lima's colonial architecture during the 17th century. For three centuries it was the favored temple of Lima's aristocracy, serving as the scene for important viceregal ceremonies and noble marriages. It survived devastating earthquakes, including that of 1746 which destroyed much of colonial Lima, demonstrating the solidity of its Jesuit construction.
🏛️ Architecture
The basilica represents a magnificent example of Lima colonial architecture, fusing European Baroque elements with Mudéjar influences and local seismic adaptations. Its late Neoclassical façade presents a harmonious composition of pilasters and pediments framing the sober Jesuit elegance. The interior, with three naves and transept, exhibits golden altarpieces that dazzle with their ornamental richness and artistic quality. The Mudéjar coffered ceilings, executed by local master carpenters, show the cultural synthesis of the viceroyalty. The sacristy, considered a jewel of colonial carpentry, preserves original 17th-century furniture. Its adobe and quincha walls, adapted pre-Hispanic construction techniques, demonstrate the anti-seismic engineering developed in colonial Lima.

Today it continues its pastoral mission in the heart of Lima, serving both local faithful and tourists seeking to understand the Jesuit legacy in Peru.
